How this tool works

A URL slug is the part of a web address that identifies a specific page: /blog/how-to-fix-a-messy-csv-export. Slugs must be lowercase, contain only letters, digits, and hyphens, and have no spaces or special characters — requirements that CMS platforms (WordPress, Ghost, Shopify) enforce at publishing time. Generating slugs by hand for a batch of 200 blog posts or product names is tedious. Accented characters (é, ü, ñ), apostrophes, ampersands, and non-ASCII characters all need individual attention. This tool handles all of them in one pass: 1. Accents are stripped (René → rene, Naïve → naive) using Unicode normalisation (NFD decomposition). 2. Ampersands are replaced with 'and'. 3. Spaces and underscores are replaced with hyphens. 4. All remaining non-alphanumeric characters are removed. 5. Multiple consecutive hyphens are collapsed into one. 6. Leading and trailing hyphens are removed. Controls on this page: - Paste one title per line for batch processing (each line becomes a separate slug). - Type 'convert to URL slug' and click Run. - Add 'keep underscores' to preserve existing underscores rather than converting them. - Add 'max 60 characters' to truncate slugs at a word boundary for cleaner URLs. All conversion runs inside your browser.

Things that usually go wrong

  • Non-Latin scripts (Arabic, Chinese, Devanagari) are transliterated if a transliteration table is available; otherwise the characters are dropped entirely — add the Latin equivalent manually.
  • Trailing version numbers like 'v2.0' become 'v20' when the dot is stripped — preserve them manually if needed.
  • Very long titles produce very long slugs — always set a character limit when building a CMS import.

Edge cases we tested

🧪 Accented characters (Résumé, Naïve, Zürich)

NFD decomposed and ASCII base retained: resume, naive, zurich.

🧪 Ampersand in title ('Tools & Resources')

Replaced with 'and': tools-and-resources.

🧪 Leading numbers ('10 Ways to…')

Preserved: 10-ways-to.

🧪 All-special-character input ('!!!')

Returns empty string with a warning — slug would be blank.

🧪 Already-slugified input ('my-page-title')

Returned unchanged — no double-hyphenation introduced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the output always be lowercase?

Yes. URL slugs are conventionally all-lowercase for SEO consistency and to avoid duplicate-URL issues.

Can I use underscores instead of hyphens?

Add 'use underscores' to your instruction. Google treats hyphens as word separators and underscores as word joiners — hyphens are recommended for SEO.

What happens to emojis in the title?

They are removed. Emojis are not valid URL characters in standard slugs.

Can I slugify an entire CSV column of titles?

Yes — paste the column values one per line. Each value becomes a slug on the corresponding output line.
