How this tool works

Financial models, accounting ledgers, and operational reports frequently store different data categories in separate tabs within a single Excel workbook (.xlsx)—such as having individual tabs for 'January', 'February', and 'March', or separate sheets for regional branches. However, automated data ingestion pipelines, SQL bulk loaders, and Python scripts cannot easily ingest multi-tab Excel files. Database loaders like COPY in PostgreSQL or LOAD DATA INFILE in MySQL require individual, clean CSV files. Manually opening an Excel file with 20 sheets and repeatedly clicking 'Save As -> CSV' is agonizingly slow and error-prone. DataFix reads your uploaded .xlsx workbook in the browser using high-speed binary parsing. It enumerates all worksheets, calculates row and column boundaries, converts each sheet into an RFC 4180 compliant CSV named after the tab (e.g. 'Q1_Sales.csv'), and allows you to download them individually or bundled in a single ZIP archive. Extracting individual worksheets from multi-tab Excel workbooks into standalone CSV or JSON files isolates department-specific records for independent processing.

Things that usually go wrong

  • Hidden sheets are included in the split — deselect them if you only want visible data.
  • Sheet names with special characters (/, \, :) are sanitised in the output filename.

Edge cases we tested

🧪 Hidden worksheets in the Excel workbook

Options to include or exclude hidden sheets during export.

🧪 Sheet names containing slashes or illegal filename characters ('P&L/2026')

Sanitized to safe filesystem characters ('P&L_2026.csv').

🧪 Formulas in cells referencing other worksheets

Evaluated to their cached calculated values rather than emitting broken formula text.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are formulas evaluated?

Yes. The tool reads computed values, not formulas. What you see in Excel is what you get in the CSV.

Are charts, images, and pivot tables exported?

No — only the underlying data in tabular cells is exported.

Are password-protected Excel files supported?

No — password protection must be removed in Excel before uploading to this tool.

Are .xls (old Excel format) files supported?

Yes — the tool handles both .xls (Excel 97–2003) and .xlsx (Excel 2007+) formats.
