Convert a comma-separated list into a single-column CSV

Convert a comma-separated, line-separated, or SQL IN list into a single-column CSV.

🛡️ Your rows never leave your browser.
Why Onfyt: Parses SQL IN clause syntax—strips outer parentheses and internal quote characters—so developers can paste SQL directly without manual cleanup.

How this tool works

The reverse of column-to-list: takes a delimited list of values (from a SQL IN clause, a copied spreadsheet column, or an API response) and structures them as a CSV column ready for further processing. Useful when a developer hands you a list of IDs to look up and you want to paste them into DataFix for cross-referencing with another CSV. Splitting delimited lists into vertical column rows transforms dense multi-value fields into tidy tabular records, enabling relational JOIN operations and granular categorical aggregation in databases. Expanding comma-separated lists into individual vertical rows normalizes multi-valued cells into first-normal-form relational data. When customer records bundle multiple tags, product SKUs, or category classifications into a single delimited cell, expanding the list into dedicated rows enables granular aggregation, group-by reporting, and indexed database queries. During list expansion, cells containing escaped commas (such as 'Smith, Jr.') or surrounding quote enclosures must not be split prematurely. Our algorithm parses quoting context before applying delimiter splits, maintaining entity integrity while normalizing composite cells into independent tabular records for relational database ingestion. Expanding delimited values into vertical table rows normalizes multi-value cells into atomic relational records. Normalizing tags or categories into separate rows unlocks standard group-by queries and database indexing. Trim whitespace settings ensure that padded tokens like ' tag1 , tag2 ' expand into clean, whitespace-free vertical rows ready for immediate database querying.

Things that usually go wrong

  • Values that contain the separator must be quoted — unquoted commas inside values split incorrectly.
  • Trailing commas produce an empty last value.

Edge cases we tested

🧪 Values containing spaces ('New York', 'Los Angeles')

Treated as single values when properly delimited; not split on spaces.

🧪 Empty values in list ('a,,b')

Empty values either included as blank rows or filtered depending on user setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn a multi-value cell in a CSV into multiple rows?

Yes — use this tool after extracting the cell's content.

Can I handle multiple separators at once (e.g. both comma and semicolon)?

Enable 'Multiple separators' mode and select all that apply.
