How this tool works
Things that usually go wrong
- If all values are identical, max = min and the formula produces 0/0. All normalised values become 0.
- Outliers compress all other values toward 0 or 1 — remove outliers first for better spread.
Edge cases we tested
Division by zero handled; all normalized values set to 0.0 with a warning.
Only one value; normalized to 0.0 with warning that normalization is meaningless for 1 value.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is min-max normalisation?
It scales all values to the range [0, 1]. The minimum value becomes 0, the maximum becomes 1, and all others are proportionally scaled.
Should I use min-max or Z-score normalisation?
Min-max preserves the distribution shape and is bounded [0,1]. Z-score centres around 0 with standard deviation 1. Use min-max for neural networks; Z-score for statistical tests.
