How this tool works

Mailchimp subscriber lists accumulate unsubscribed, bounced ('cleaned'), and spam-complaint contacts over time. When migrating to a new email platform or CRM, importing this raw export will register those suppressed contacts as active, resulting in deliverability problems and potential CAN-SPAM violations. This cleaner filters out unsubscribed and cleaned contacts, deduplicates email addresses (keeping the most recently updated record), validates remaining emails for format, and strips Mailchimp's internal tracking columns (OPTIN_IP, GMTOFF, DSTOFF, MEMBER_RATING) that have no meaning outside Mailchimp. Mailchimp import templates enforce rigid column schemas for email addresses, first names, and tag arrays. Ingesting lists with invalid email syntax, improper name casing, or unescaped tags results in failed contact imports and high bounce warnings. DataFix cleans and formats email marketing lists, normalizing names, removing hard-bounce syntax triggers, and formatting tag columns into comma-separated strings compliant with Mailchimp's bulk importer. Clean mailing lists protect sender deliverability by eliminating syntax errors, trailing punctuation, and duplicate subscriber entries. Normalizing name casing and formatting tag columns ensures smooth, error-free list imports into Mailchimp. Validating subscriber lists prior to campaign dispatch protects domain reputation by removing malformed email syntax, trailing spaces, and duplicate contacts. Sanitizing email lists prevents costly bounce spikes and preserves high inbox deliverability.

Things that usually go wrong

  • Mailchimp GDPR fields and custom merge fields may appear after the standard columns — they are preserved.
  • Bounced contacts should remain in Mailchimp (do not re-import them) — they are removed from the output by default.

Edge cases we tested

🧪 Email appears twice—once subscribed, once unsubscribed

The unsubscribed status takes precedence; the contact is excluded from the output.

🧪 Status = 'cleaned' (hard-bounced address)

Removed from output; 'cleaned' means the address permanently bounced.

🧪 Mailchimp GDPR 'double opt-in' fields present

Preserved as gdpr_consent_date in output for compliance records.
