Repair CSV files with missing closing quotes that swallow subsequent lines

Detect mismatched quotes that cause entire rows of data to be swallowed into a single cell.

🛡️ Your rows never leave your browser.
Why Onfyt: Performs character-level quote parity analysis to locate the exact line where an unbalanced quote broke subsequent parsing.

How this tool works

RFC 4180 requires that any CSV field containing a comma, newline, or double-quote be wrapped in double-quote delimiters, with any double-quote inside the field escaped by doubling it. An export that truncates a string before its closing delimiter, or that emits an inch symbol as a bare quotation mark, breaks the parser for every row that follows. The symptom is distinctive: after the malformed row, subsequent fields shift or merge because the parser is still hunting for a closing delimiter that never comes. When this happens, the parser swallows every subsequent line—headers, IDs, dollar values—as part of that single broken cell until it randomly hits another quote hundreds of lines later. The entire dataset collapses from thousands of clean rows into a handful of distorted, gargantuan cells. DataFix scans your raw byte stream line by line to calculate parity on quotation marks. When an odd number of quotes occurs on a line that does not represent a valid multiline string, the tool detects the unclosed boundary. Balancing unclosed quotation marks prevents single multiline values from consuming thousands of downstream records.

Things that usually go wrong

  • Automatic fixing may merge rows if a quote spans multiple actual rows — review the output row count.
  • The fix inserts a closing quote — the exact position may differ from what the data author intended.

Edge cases we tested

🧪 Inch marks used in descriptions ('Monitor 27" LED')

Escaped to standard RFC double quotes ('"Monitor 27"" LED"').

🧪 Legitimate multiline cells containing line breaks

Distinguished from unclosed quotes by checking surrounding delimiters.

🧪 Files ending abruptly on an open quote

Safely terminated with a closing quote without throwing unexpected EOF errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an unclosed quote happen?

When a cell value begins with a double-quote but the closing quote is missing — often from a database export bug or manual editing.

Does this ever produce incorrect output?

Rarely. When a quote genuinely spans rows (embedded newlines), the fix cannot know where the data ends.
