How this tool works

Importing an Excel file (.xlsx) into Google Sheets via 'File -> Import' frequently creates unexpected data corruption. Google Sheets applies aggressive automatic type coercion: it strips leading zeros from US postal codes (turning Boston '02138' into '2138'), misinterprets non-standard date formats by swapping day and month, and turns legacy Windows-1252 accented characters into unreadable mojibake. Additionally, complex Excel formulas that rely on Excel-only add-ins or specific desktop syntax break completely upon import, littering the Google Sheet with #NAME? and #REF! errors. DataFix sanitizes your Excel workbook prior to importing. It converts all text to clean UTF-8 encoding, formats dates into universal ISO 8601 (YYYY-MM-DD) so Google Sheets parses them unambiguously, freezes calculated formula values, and explicitly wraps identifier columns (ZIP codes, account numbers) in quotes with formatting hints so Google Sheets preserves every leading zero.

Things that usually go wrong

  • Google Sheets has a 10 MB upload limit for CSV files.
  • Date cells are converted to ISO format — Google Sheets may display them in your locale's format, which is correct.

Edge cases we tested

🧪 Leading zeros in postal codes and account numbers ('00100')

Protected from numeric conversion to ensure '00100' does not become 100.

🧪 Accented international names in legacy encodings

Decoded to universal UTF-8 so characters like é, ñ, and ü display crisply.

🧪 Formulas containing #N/A or #VALUE! errors

Replaced with clean blank cells to prevent formula cascade failures in Sheets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not just use Excel's own 'Save as CSV'?

Excel adds a BOM, uses CRLF line endings, and formats dates in locale-specific formats. All three cause problems in Google Sheets. This tool produces a clean UTF-8/LF/ISO-date CSV.

Are all sheets exported?

By default, only the first sheet. Use Split Excel by Sheet to export all sheets separately.

Why does Google Sheets sometimes show dates wrong even after a clean import?

Google Sheets applies your account's locale date format on display, but the underlying value is correct. Check Format → Number → Date in Sheets to confirm — the stored date should match your source.

My Excel file has multiple sheets — which one is exported?

By default the first visible sheet. Use Split Excel by Sheet to export all sheets, then import them one by one into Google Sheets.
