How this tool works

Markdown has become the standard authoring format for documentation, README files, blog drafts, and API docs. But most publishing pipelines, email builders, and CMSes require HTML. Converting by hand — adding <h2>, <ul>, <li>, <strong>, and <a href> tags to every paragraph — is slow and error-prone. This tool converts the full CommonMark Markdown spec plus GitHub Flavoured Markdown (GFM) extensions: - Headings: # H1 through ###### H6 → <h1> through <h6> - Emphasis: *italic* and **bold** → <em> and <strong> - Lists: unordered (- item), ordered (1. item), and nested lists - Links: [text](url) → <a href="url">text</a> - Images: ![alt](src) → <img alt="alt" src="src"> - Code spans: `inline code` → <code>inline code</code> - Code blocks: fenced (```) and indented → <pre><code>…</code></pre> - Blockquotes: > text → <blockquote> - Horizontal rules: --- → <hr> - Tables (GFM): pipe-delimited → <table><thead><tbody> - Strikethrough (GFM): ~~text~~ → <del>text</del> - Task lists (GFM): - [x] done → <input type="checkbox" checked disabled> Output modes: - **Fragment** (default): just the converted HTML elements, no doctype. - **Full page**: wraps output in a complete <!DOCTYPE html> document with a <meta charset="UTF-8"> head. All conversion runs inside your browser tab — no server upload.

Things that usually go wrong

  • Markdown inside an HTML block element (e.g.
    **bold**
) is not parsed as Markdown — the Markdown must be outside block-level HTML tags.
  • Indented code blocks require exactly 4 spaces of indentation — 3 or 2 will be treated as plain text.
  • Smart quotes and em-dashes are not added automatically — this is a literal Markdown-to-HTML converter, not a typography enhancer.

Edge cases we tested

🧪 HTML already embedded in Markdown (raw
inside Markdown)

Passed through unchanged — raw HTML in Markdown is kept as-is per the spec.

🧪 Fenced code block with language hint (```python … ```)

Converted to

 for syntax highlighter compatibility.

🧪 GFM table with misaligned column separators

Parsed leniently — column count is inferred from the header row.

🧪 Nested unordered lists (two levels deep)

Converted to nested

    • structure correctly.

🧪 Empty Markdown input

Returns empty HTML output, not an error.
