Minify and compress JSON strings for production APIs

Compress structured JSON files into single-line minified strings to reduce payload size.

🛡️ Your rows never leave your browser.
Why Onfyt: Compresses JSON strings by up to 45% with instant syntax verification in your browser without transmitting proprietary configs.

How this tool works

Pretty-printed JSON consumes space proportional to indentation depth: a deeply nested configuration object formatted with 2-space indentation might weigh 120 KB, while the same data stripped of all whitespace fits in 60 KB. For mobile API payloads, Redis cache entries, DynamoDB attribute values, and Kafka message bodies — where bytes translate directly to cost and latency — stripping indentation whitespace is a mandatory step before writing data to the wire. A minifier parses the JSON string to ensure structural validity and re-serializes the data without extraneous whitespace characters outside of string literals. Spaces inside string values (such as 'Grace Kerubo' or 'Nairobi, Kenya') are preserved, while exterior padding around colons, braces, and commas is stripped. Because DataFix performs minification client-side in your browser, sensitive production configuration objects and customer records never cross the wire. During network transmission and distributed caching, minifying JSON strips non-semantic whitespace, newlines, indentations, and carriage returns that inflate payload size by 30% to 50%. While minification is straightforward for simple structures, preserving whitespace inside quoted string values is critical. A naive regex that strips spaces will corrupt text properties, URLs, and formatted customer descriptions. DataFix's tokenizer distinguishes string literals from structural syntax tokens, collapsing outer whitespace while leaving inner string contents completely intact. Stripping unnecessary whitespace reduces JSON payload size without altering string literals like street addresses or names.

Things that usually go wrong

  • Minifying already-minified JSON is a no-op — useful to check if the original was already compact.
  • If the tool reports an error, the input JSON is syntactically invalid. Fix it with the JSON Formatter first.

Edge cases we tested

🧪 Strings containing intentional spaces

Preserves spaces inside quotes ('Hello World') while eliminating indentation spaces.

🧪 Escaped newline characters (\n)

Retains escaped slash-n sequences inside string properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much smaller does minification make JSON?

Typically 20–40% smaller, depending on how much whitespace was in the original.

Is minified JSON still valid?

Yes. JSON spec allows any amount of whitespace to be removed between tokens.
